A retrospective study was carried out to evaluate the effects of treatment with rosuvastatin (Crestor) and rosuvastatin/levothyroxine on the clearance of thyroid hormones in patients with primary hyperandrogenism, and compared to a placebo. We identified patients aged 15 to 54 years, with thyroid disease and hyperthyroidism at baseline. At week 14, patients had a mean serum total T3 level of 4.6 ng/mL (range, 1.3 to 8.7). In the subgroup of patients who received placebo, a significant reduction in the time to T3 clearance was seen in the subgroup receiving rosuvastatin (2.9% [range, 1.3 to 11.6%), p = 0.03), however, there were no significant differences between groups in the time to T3 clearance (0.9-3.1 h [95% confidence interval, -0.7 to 4.0 h]). The mean absolute change in T3 clearance was 3.8% (3.1 to 7.5 h) in the subgroup receiving rosuvastatin and 3.5% (3.2 to 5.4 h) in the subgroup receiving rosuvastatin and placebo (p = 0.056). In the subgroup of patients with and without hyperthyroidism, the time to T3 clearance was significantly shorter in the rosuvastatin group than in the placebo group (6.5 vs 8.6 h, p = 0.0005).

Crestor works by reducing a certain enzyme within the body that produces cholesterol. It belongs to a class of medications called statins.

Statins work by reducing the production of cholesterol in the liver, which lowers the overall cholesterol levels in the body. Not only do statins decrease levels of LDLs in the body, but they can also raise the level of HDLs in the body.
